Modeling attenuation of photosynthetically active radiation across the optical gradient in the Laurentian Great Lakes with application to Lake Erie

Representation of subsurface photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) in biophysical models of the Laurentian Great Lakes (LGL) is imperative to their utility as tools for research and management. Here we consolidated measured vertical profiles of subsurface PAR with concurrent water quality (WQ) data from four LGL. We estimated the diffuse attenuation coefficient of PAR (Kd(PAR)) by fitting an exponential function to measured PAR over depth, and evaluated 68 regressions predicting Kd(PAR) as a function of water quality variables (Kd-WQ regressions). We compare four of the top cross-lake calibrated regressions against two published regressions trained on western Lake Erie (WLE) data. Then, as a case study, we demonstrate the utility of our cross-lake calibrated Kd-WQ regressions with a simplified biophysical model of Lake Erie consisting of the Finite Volume Community Ocean Model with submodules for simulating suspended sediment and dissolved organic carbon (FVCOM-SS-DOC). Twenty-five Kd-WQ regressions were identified as candidates for use in biophysical models based on their skill determined via cross-validation. WLE-trained Kd-WQ regressions were less able to simulate Kd(PAR) and PAR in more transparent waters compared to cross-lake calibrated Kd-WQ regressions, which translated to considerable differences in primary production estimates for the central and eastern basins when using WQ data simulated by FVCOM-SS-DOC. A cross-lake calibrated Kd-WQ regression was installed into FVCOM-SS-DOC, which then simulated spatial patterns of suspended sediments and Kd(PAR). These calibrated Kd-WQ regressions can be used in a variety of biophysical models across optically-distinct waters of the LGL to support adaptive management of nutrient inputs and fisheries

Spatiotemporal variation and response of gross primary productivity to climate factors in forests in Qiannan state from 2000 to 2020

Accurate estimation of terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) is essential for quantifying the carbon exchange between the atmosphere and biosphere. Light use efficiency (LUE) models are widely used to estimate GPP at different spatial scales. However, difficulties in properly determining the maximum LUE (LUEmax) and downregulation of LUEmax into actual LUE result in uncertainties in the LUE-estimated GPP. The recently developed P model, a new LUE model, captures the adaptability of vegetation to the environment and simplifies parameterization. Site-level studies have proven the superior performance of the P model over LUE models. As a representative karst region with significant changes in forest cover in Southwest China, Qiannan is useful for exploring the spatiotemporal variation in forest GPP and its response to climate change for formulating forest management policies to address climate changes, e.g., global warming. Based on remote sensing and meteorological data, this study estimated the forest ecosystem GPP in Qiannan from 2000–2020 via the P model. This study explored the spatiotemporal changes in GPP in the study region over the past 20 years, used the Hurst index to predict future development trends from a time series perspective, and used partial correlation analysis to analyse the spatiotemporal GPP changes over the past 20 years in response to three factors: temperature, precipitation, and vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Our results showed that (1) the total amount of GPP and average GPP in Qiannan over the past 21 years (2000–2020) were 1.9 × 104 ± 2.0 × 103 MgC ha−1 year−1 and 1238.9 ± 107.9 gC m−2 year−1, respectively. The forest GPP generally increased at a rate of 6.1 gC m−2 year−1 from 2000 to 2020 in Qiannan, and this increase mainly occurred in the nongrowing season. (2) From 2000 to 2020, the forest GPP in Qiannan was higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest, indicating significant spatial heterogeneity. In the future, more than 70% of regional forest GPP will experience a weak increase in nonsustainability. (3) In Qiannan, forest GPP was positively correlated with both temperature and precipitation, with partial correlation coefficients of 0.10 and 0.11, respectively. However, the positive response of GPP to precipitation was approximately 70.47%, while that to temperature was 64.05%. Precipitation had a stronger restrictive effect on GPP than did temperature in this region, and GPP exhibited a negative correlation with VPD. The results showed that an increase in VPD inhibits GPP to some extent. Under rapid global change, the P model GPP provides new GPP data for global ecology studies, and the comparison of various stress factors allows for improvement of the GPP model in the future. The results of this study will aid in understanding the dynamic processes of terrestrial carbon. These findings are helpful for estimating and predicting the carbon budget of forest ecosystems in karst regions, clarifying the regional carbon absorption capacity, clarifying the main factors limiting vegetation growth in these regions, promoting sustainable regional forestry development and serving the “dual carbon goal.” This work has important guiding significance for policy formulation to mitigate climate change.

Estimation of Corn Net Primary Productivity and Carbon Sequestration Based on the CASA Model: A Case Study of the Fen River Basin

The utilization of remote sensing technology to assess changes in crop net primary productivity (NPP), biomass, and carbon sequestration within the Fen River Basin, a crucial agricultural region in China, is important for achieving agricultural modernization, enhancing ecological environment quality, and obtaining carbon neutrality objectives. This study employed satellite remote sensing and the Carnegie–Ames–Stanford approach (CASA) model as research methods to investigate the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of corn NPP in the Fen River Basin. Correlation analysis was conducted to examine the response of corn NPP to various environmental factors in the region, while aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration of corn were estimated using a biomass inversion model driven by NPP and principles of photosynthesis in green plants. The findings revealed that, from a temporal perspective, corn NPP in the Fen River Basin exhibited a unimodal variation pattern, with an average value of 368.65 gC/m2. Spatially, the corn NPP displayed a discernible differentiation pattern, with the highest values primarily observed in the middle reaches of the Fen River Basin. Throughout the spatial and temporal variations in corn NPP during 2011–2020, the carbon sequestration capacity of corn exhibited an upward trend, particularly since 2017. The corn NPP displayed a positive correlation with temperature and precipitation. The response to solar radiation was mildly negative and a mildly positive correlation. In 2020, the aboveground biomass and carbon sequestration of corn followed a normal distribution, with the highest values concentrated in the northwestern part of the lower Fen River.

Estimation of cucumber net primary production using environmental and control information in a smart multi-span plastic greenhouse

A smart greenhouse can be considered as a very large chamber under closed conditions. The amount of change in CO2 concentration inside the greenhouse during periods without CO2 fertilization depends on the net primary production (i.e., net carbon assimilated by plants via photosynthesis) (NPP) of the crops grown in the greenhouse. In this study, we estimated the NPP of cucumbers in a small-scale smart multi-span plastic greenhouse using environmental and control information collected during a low-temperature period when the greenhouse was frequently closed. The timescale for robustly calculating NPP using the temporal change in the CO2 concentration inside the greenhouse was empirically determined (=10 min), and a random forest-based NPP model was established using the calculated NPP and internal and external environmental greenhouse data to estimate NPP, even in the cases of opening roof windows or supplying CO2. The estimated NPP showed previously known relationships with environmental variables in the greenhouse, and cumulative NPP was consistent with cucumber growth. Based on the CO2 balance equation of a smart greenhouse and estimated NPP, we quantified the amount of CO2 supplied and CO2 emissions via the roof windows. The CO2 budget estimation errors and suggestions for reducing errors were discussed. The quantified CO2 budget in the greenhouse, including NPP, can be used for evaluating economic feasibility and improving crop productivity.

Uncertainty analysis of intra-module environmental stress parameter design in light use efficiency-based gross primary productivity estimation models

Terrestrial gross primary productivity is a key part in the carbon cycle, and the light use efficiency model is a widely employed tool for its estimation. However, since the specific designs of environmental stress parameters in light use efficiency models have obvious disparities, even for a single module (e.g., the temperature stress module), the uncertainties related to intra-module environmental stress parameters in light use efficiency models remain unclear. Thus, we gathered mainstream temperature and water stress parameters in light use efficiency models from existing publications, and employed a compatible framework to assess them from three perspectives: (1) identifying similarities and differences of environmental stress parameters; (2) evaluating the error propagation effect of input data under different environmental stress parameter combinations; and (3) assessing the generalization ability of environmental stress parameters. The results showed that the temperature stress parameters exhibited general homogeneity (shared 67.87% variance), while water stress parameters displayed noticeable internal variations (shared variance below 1.0%). Meanwhile, we revealed that the current flexible parameter combination method in light use efficiency model construction should be more cautious, since the flexible environmental stress parameter combinations would influence the error propagation effect from input data to final gross primary productivity estimations. In addition, our analysis found that the variance of environmental stress parameters was closely coupled to model estimation accuracy, and there was a positive relationship between the unique variance of temperature stress parameters and the ability of temperature stress parameters to describe gross primary productivity variation. Overall, the current environmental stress parameters demonstrated acceptable performance across most situations, except for biomes with high temperatures. This study provided a foundation towards the development of future parameter design, which may also inspire the application of empirical environmental factors in other gross primary productivity models.

Metabolism Regimes in Regulated Rivers of the Illinois River Basin, USA

Metabolism estimates organic carbon accumulation by primary productivity and removal by respiration. In rivers it is relevant to assessing trophic status and threats to river health such as hypoxia as well as greenhouse gas fluxes. We estimated metabolism in 17 rivers of the Illinois River basin (IRB) for a total of 15,176 days, or an average of 2.5 years per site. Daily estimates of gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), net ecosystem productivity (NEP), and the air-water gas exchange rate constant (K600) are reported, along with ancillary data such as river temperature and saturated dissolved oxygen concentration, barometric pressure, and river depth and discharge. Workflows for metabolism estimation and quality assurance are described including a new method for estimating river depth. IRB rivers are dominantly heterotrophic; however, autotrophy was common in river locations coinciding with reported harmful algal blooms (HABs) events. Metabolism of these regulated Midwestern U.S. rivers can help assess the causes and consequences of excessive algal blooms in rivers and their role in river ecological health.

Assessing the Distribution and Driving Effects of Net Primary Productivity along an Elevation Gradient in Subtropical Regions of China

Globally, forest ecosystems, especially subtropical forests, play a central role in biogeochemical cycles and climate regulation, demonstrating their irreplaceable function. The subtropical region of China, characterized by its unique forest ecosystem, complex terrain, climate heterogeneity, diverse vegetation types, and frequent human activities, underscores the importance of the in-depth study of its net primary productivity (NPP). This paper employs the eddy covariance–light use efficiency (EC-LUE) model to quantitatively estimate the gross primary productivity (GPP) of this region from 2001 to 2018, followed by an estimation of the actual net primary productivity (ANPP) using the carbon use efficiency (CUE). The results showed that over these 18 years, the annual average ANPP was 677.17 gC m−2 a−1, exhibiting an overall increasing trend, particularly in mountainous areas, reserves, and the cultivated lands of the northeastern plains, whereas a significant decrease was observed around the urban agglomerations on the southeast coast. Furthermore, the Thornthwaite memorial model was applied to calculate the potential net primary productivity (PNPP), and diverse scenarios were set to quantitatively evaluate the impact of climate change and human activities on the vegetation productivity in the study area. It was found that in areas where the ANPP increased, both human activities and climate change jointly influenced ANPP dynamics; in areas with a decreased ANPP, the impact of human activities was particularly significant. Additionally, the heterogeneous distribution of ANPP across different altitudinal gradients and the driving effects of various climatic factors were analyzed. Finally, a partial correlation analysis was used to examine the relationships between the temperature, precipitation, and ANPP. This study indicated that temperature and precipitation have a substantial impact on the growth and distribution of vegetation in the region, yet the extent of this influence shows considerable variation among different areas. This provides a robust scientific basis for further research and understanding of the carbon dynamics of subtropical forest ecosystems and their role in the global carbon cycle.

Improved estimation of gross primary production with NIRvP by incorporating a phenophase scheme for temperate deciduous forest ecosystems

NIRvP, the product of the remotely sensed near infrared reflectance of vegetation (NIRv) and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), has been demonstrated to be a good proxy for terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) due to their strong theoretical correlation. Currently, a linear relationship with a constant slope parameter (k) is used to estimate GPP with NIRvP. However, this parameter may vary with plant phenology, potentially leading to uncertainty in GPP estimation. In this study, we hypothesized that considering the influence of phenology on k could improve the accuracy of GPP estimation. To test this hypothesis, we used pair measurements of ground eddy covariance-derived GPP and satellite-derived NIRvP across nine temperate deciduous forest sites, and compared the modeling results of two parameterization schemes: one with a constant k throughout the entire growing season (termed the global scheme) and another with dynamic k parameters across different phenophases (e.g., greenup, mature and senescence phases; termed the phenophase scheme). Our results show that relative to the global scheme, the phenophase scheme significantly improved GPP estimation with a reduction in bias by 63.71 ± 16.46%, 53.71 ± 26.17% and 32.96 ± 32.07% in the greenup, maturity and senescence phases across all study sites, respectively. Moreover, the efficiency of this improvement is meaningful in terms of the Akaike Information Criterion (AIC). Further regression analysis revealed that k varies with phenophase, which can be attributed to variations in photosynthetic capacity and canopy optical properties due to leaf aging and canopy structure development. These findings collectively improve our understanding of the influence of phenology on the GPP-NIRvP relationship and emphasize the effectiveness of using the phenophase-dependent k parameterization scheme, which would ultimately contribute to improving the accuracy of GPP estimation in temperate forest ecosystems.

Measuring stomatal and guard cell metrics for plant physiology and growth using StoManager1.

Automated guard cell detection and measurement are vital for understanding plant physiological performance and ecological functioning in global water and carbon cycles. Most current methods for measuring guard cells and stomata are laborious, time-consuming, prone to bias, and limited in scale. We developed StoManager1, a high-throughput tool utilizing geometrical and mathematical algorithms and convolutional neural networks to automatically detect, count, and measure over 30 guard cell and stomatal metrics, including guard cell and stomatal area, length, width, stomatal aperture area/guard cell area, orientation, stomatal evenness, divergence, and aggregation index. Combined with leaf functional traits, some of these StoManager1-measured guard cell and stomatal metrics explained 90% and 82% of tree biomass and intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE) variances in hardwoods, making them substantial factors in leaf physiology and tree growth. StoManager1 demonstrated exceptional precision and recall (mAP@0.5 over 0.96), effectively capturing diverse stomatal properties across over 100 species. StoManager1 facilitates the automation of measuring leaf guard cells, enabling broader exploration of stomatal control in plant growth and adaptation to environmental stress and climate change. This has implications for global gross primary productivity (GPP) modeling and estimation, as integrating stomatal metrics can enhance predictions of plant growth and resource usage worldwide. NDVI joint process-based models drive a learning ensemble model for accurately estimating cropland net primary productivity (NPP)

The accurate estimation of cropland net primary productivity (NPP) remains a significant challenge. We hypothesized that incorporating prior information on NPP simulated by process-based models into normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data would improve the accuracy of cropland ecosystem NPP estimations. We used NDVI, MNPP (NPP of process-based model), and SNPP (statistic-based NPP) data estimated by nine process-based models and yield statistics to build a learning ensemble of the random forest model (LERFM). We used the new model to re-evaluate the cropland NPP in China from 1982 to 2010. Large spatial discrepancies among MNPPs, which indicate uncertainties in cropland NPP estimation using different methods, were observed when compared to SNPP. The LERFM model showed a slightly underestimation of only −0.37%, while the multi-model average process-based model (MMEM) strongly underestimated −15.46% of the SNPP. LERFM accurately estimated cropland NPP with a high simulation skill score. A consistent increasing trend in the LERFM and MMEM NPP during 1982–2010 and a significant positive correlation (r = 0.795, p < 0.001) between their total NPP indicate that the LERFM model can better describe spatiotemporal dynamic changes in cropland NPP. This study suggests that a learning ensemble method that combines the NDVI and process-based simulation results can effectively improve cropland NPP.

Estimation of Daily Maize Gross Primary Productivity by Considering Specific Leaf Nitrogen and Phenology via Machine Learning Methods

Maize gross primary productivity (GPP) contributes the most to the global cropland GPP, making it crucial to accurately estimate maize GPP for the global carbon cycle. Previous research validated machine learning (ML) methods using remote sensing and meteorological data to estimate plant GPP, yet they disregard vegetation physiological dynamics driven by phenology. Leaf nitrogen content per unit leaf area (i.e., specific leaf nitrogen (SLN)) greatly affects photosynthesis. Its maximum allowable value correlates with a phenological factor conceptualized as normalized maize phenology (NMP). This study aims to validate SLN and NMP for maize GPP estimation using four ML methods (random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), convolutional neutral network (CNN), and extreme learning machine (ELM)). Inputs consist of vegetation index (NDVI), air temperature, solar radiation (SSR), NMP, and SLN. Data from four American maize flux sites (NE1, NE2, and NE3 sites in Nebraska and RO1 site in Minnesota) were gathered. Using data from three NE sites to validate the effect of SLN and MMP shows that the accuracy of four ML methods notably increased after adding SLN and MMP. Among these methods, RF and SVM achieved the best performance of Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) = 0.9703 and 0.9706, root mean square error (RMSE) = 1.5596 and 1.5509 gC·m−2·d−1, and coefficient of variance (CV) = 0.1508 and 0.1470, respectively. When evaluating the best ML models from three NE sites at the RO1 site, only RF and CNN could effectively incorporate the impact of SLN and NMP. But, in terms of unbiased estimation results, the four ML models were comprehensively enhanced by adding SLN and NMP. Due to their fixed relationship, introducing SLN or NMP alone might be more effective than introducing both simultaneously, considering the data redundancy for methods like CNN and ELM. This study supports the integration of phenology and leaf-level photosynthetic factors in plant GPP estimation via ML methods and provides a reference for similar research.

Evaluation of three contrasting models in estimating primary production from ocean color remote sensing using long-term time-series data at oceanic and coastal sites

Accurate estimates of depth-integrated Net Primary Production (NPP, mg C m−2 d−1) and the creation of a robust climate data record of NPP for the global oceans are essential goals of the ocean color remote sensing community. Here, we take advantage of in situ NPP measurements from three long-term time-series sites, the HOT (Hawaii Ocean Time-series), BATS (Bermuda Atlantic Time-series Study) and CARIACO (Ocean Time-Series Program from the Cariaco basin), spanning over 30 years to evaluate three contrasting models in estimating NPP from ocean color remote sensing. These models for NPP estimation include the Absorption-based Model (AbPM), which relies on phytoplankton absorption coefficient, the Vertically Generalized Production Model (VGPM), which centers on chlorophyll-a concentration, and the Carbon-based Productivity Model (CbPM) centering on phytoplankton carbon. In addition to the accuracy of NPP estimation from these models, we laid great emphasis on evaluating their skills in capturing the monthly to seasonal variations and interannual trends in NPP at the three sites. Comparison with in situ NPP at all three long-term sites (∼20 years) showed that AbPM yielded the highest coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.67) and the lowest uncertainties (Bias = 0.03 and unbiased root mean square difference = 0.17). Seasonal and interannual variations apparent in the in situ NPP time-series records were best captured by AbPM. These results showcase the robust capabilities of AbPM and its superiority for global carbon cycling and climate change studies, largely because it takes into account optical and photosynthetic parameters of local phytoplankton.

Regional estimates of gross primary production applying the Process-Based Model 3D-CMCC-FEM vs. Remote-Sensing multiple datasets

ABSTRACT Process-based Forest Models (PBFMs) offer the possibility to capture important spatial and temporal patterns of carbon fluxes and stocks in forests. Yet, their predictive capacity should be demonstrated not only at the stand-level but also in the context of broad spatial and temporal heterogeneity. We apply a stand scale PBFM (3D-CMCC-FEM) in a spatially explicit manner at 1 km resolution in southern Italy. We developed a methodology to initialize the model that includes information derived from the integration of Remote Sensing (RS) and the National Forest Inventory (NFI) data and regional forest maps to characterize structural features of the main forest species. Gross primary production (GPP) is simulated over 2005–2019 period and the model predictive capability of the model in simulating GPP is evaluated both aggregated as at species-level through multiple independent data sources based on different nature RS-based products. We show that the model is able to reproduce most of the spatial (~2800 km2) and temporal (32 years in total) patterns of the observed GPP at both seasonal, annual and interannual time scales, even at the species-level. These promising results open the possibility of confindently applying the 3D-CMCC-FEM to investigate the forests’ behaviour under climate and environmental variability over large areas across highly variable ecological and bio-geographical heterogeneity of the Mediterranean region.

Joint improvement on absorbed photosynthetically active radiation and intrinsic quantum yield efficiency algorithms in the P model betters the estimate of terrestrial gross primary productivity

Terrestrial gross primary productivity (GPP) plays a crucial role in global carbon cycle and budget. A range of light use efficiency (LUE) models have been developed to estimate GPP at different spatial scales. However, large uncertainties still remain in GPP output from such models, mainly owing to the difficulty in the proper determination of maximum light use efficiency (LUEmax). The recently developed P model directly quantifies actual LUE based on environmental and physiological factors, reducing the uncertainty in GPP estimation caused by the ambiguous LUEmax. However, the existing P models still suffer from a potential underestimation in global validation, which might be related to the calculation of absorbed photosynthetically active radiation (APAR) and intrinsic quantum yield efficiency (φ0) in the P model. In this study, we improved the P model by differentiating sunlit and shaded leaves for APAR calculation and by considering the spatial variability of the optimal temperature for φ0 (Topt_phi0). The roles of modified APAR and φ0 calculations in reducing the uncertainty of simulated GPP were assessed through model simulation experiments with monthly tower-based GPP from 120 flux sites globally distributed as the benchmark. The validation indicates that simultaneous improvements on APAR and φ0 algorithms are able to better the performance of the P model. Monthly GPP simulated with this improved P model (i.e., IP model) is in good agreement with tower-based values, with a linear R2, root mean squared error, mean error, mean absolute error, and DISO of 0.76, 1.88 g C m−2d−1, -0.14 g C m−2d−1, 1.77 g C m−2d−1 and 0.60. The total global terrestrial GPP output from the IP model (IPGPP) averaged 134.3 Pg C yr−1 during 1981—2021, in the upper range of existing GPP products.

Multi-source data-driven estimation of urban net primary productivity: A case study of Wuhan

Amidst urban expansion, numerous ecological challenges have surfaced, notably the swift alterations in the net primary productivity (NPP), presenting complexities in discerning their scale and spatial distribution. Leveraging meteorological data, multi-modal remote sensing datasets, field sampling data, and a digital elevation model (DEM), this research amalgamates field assessments, model simulations, and cutting-edge remote sensing techniques to craft a city-scale NPP estimation model for vegetation rooted in the Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA). This improved CASA model facilitated the computation of monthly NPP for Wuhan over 2017–2020. Our analysis divulged NPP spatiotemporal trends and distribution nuances in Wuhan, and assessed meteorological influences on the same. Salient conclusions encompass: (1) Wuhan's annual NPP maximum between 984.40 and 1310.51 gC/(m2 a), averaging from 316.78 to 430.32 gC/(m2 a), and culminating in totals from 170.15 to 231.60 × 1010 gC/a. (2) Monthly NPP trajectories in Wuhan exhibited a unimodal pattern: ascending from January to June, peaking in July–August, and tapering off through September-December, with a spatial distribution characterized by lower NPP values centrally and higher values peripherally. (3) Regionally, temperature markedly influenced NPP over precipitation. This research underpins urban ecological planning, offering empirical insights and strategic guidance for fostering a sustainable coexistence between humans and their environment, and charting future urban development paradigms.

Modeling transpiration using solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence and photochemical reflectance index synergistically in a closed-canopy winter wheat ecosystem

The joint use of solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF) and the photochemical reflectance index (PRI) has been shown to improve gross primary productivity (GPP) estimation across various plant functional types. However, the utility of PRI in combination with SIF for transpiration (T) estimation has not yet been explored. Additionally, current SIF-driven transpiration models including linear models, semi-mechanical models (combination of canopy conductance, gC, derived from a SIF and vapor pressure deficit, VPD, driven linear model with the Penman-Monteith model), and hybrid models (combination of gC derived from a SIF and VPD driven machine learning model with the Penman-Monteith model) have rarely been mutually assessed. Based on concurrent remotely sensed SIF and PRI, and eddy covariance flux measurements during one growing season for a winter wheat ecosystem in northern China, we investigated the mediating effect of PRI on SIF-driven T estimation under different VPD conditions and compared the performance of linear, semi-mechanical, and hybrid models in estimating T. Our results showed that the mediating effect of PRI on T described in the SIF-driven linear, semi-mechanistic, and hybrid models was significant under high VPD conditions rather than under low VPD conditions. Specifically, based on T partitioned using an underlying water use efficiency method as a benchmark, the root mean square error (RMSE) value of the PRI-mediated linear, semi-mechanistic, and hybrid models was 28.01 W/m2, 22.25 W/m2, and 28.71 W/m2 lower, respectively, than those of the corresponding models without PRI when VPD was >1.5 kPa. Based on T partitioned using a transpiration estimation algorithm as a benchmark, these three models also exhibited a significant reduction in RMSE under high VPD conditions after considering PRI. The main rationale behind the PRI improvement is that PRI can track photosynthetic dynamics under high VPD conditions. Based on the simulation results of the Soil-Canopy-Observation of Photosynthesis and Energy fluxes (SCOPE) model, PRI can serve as an indicator for non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) within this ecosystem. Consequently, PRI can enhance the capability of SIF to characterize the energy dissipation of photosynthetically active radiation and help SIF to yield more accurate information on GPP and gc under high VPD conditions. Finally, the order of model performance in estimating T was generally hybrid model > semi-mechanistic model > linear model. Our findings show the effectiveness of PRI for improving SIF-driven transpiration estimation under high VPD conditions and provide a new hybrid model for estimating T from SIF.

A dynamic-leaf light use efficiency model for improving gross primary production estimation

Accurate quantification of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) is integral for enhancing our understanding of the global carbon budget and climate change. The light use efficiency (LUE) model is undoubtedly the most extensively applied method for GPP estimation. However, the two-leaf (TL)-LUE model using a ‘potential’ sunlit leaf area index (LAIsu) can separate a portion of LAIsu even when the canopy does not receive any direct radiation, leading to the underestimation of GPP under cloudy and overcast days. Here, we developed a dynamic-leaf (DL) LUE model by introducing an ‘effective’ LAIsu to improve GPP estimation, which considers the comprehensive contribution of LAIsu when the canopy does and does not receive direct radiation. In particular, the new model decreases LAIsu to zero when direct radiation reaches zero. Our evaluation at eight ChinaFLUX sites showed that (1) the DL-LUE model outperformed the most well-known BL-LUE (namely, the MOD17 GPP algorithm) and TL-LUE models in reproducing the daily in situ GPP, especially at four forest sites [reducing the root mean square error (RMSE) from 1.74 g C m−2 d−1 and 1.53 g C m−2 d−1 to 1.36 g C m−2 d−1 and increasing the coefficient of determination (R 2) from 0.74 and 0.79–0.82, respectively]. Moreover, the improvements were particularly pronounced at longer temporal scales, as indicated by the RMSE decreasing from 29.32 g C m−2 month−1 and28.11 g C m−2 month−1 to 25.81 g C m−2 month−1 at a monthly scale and from 231.82 g C m−2 yr−1 and 221.60 g C m−2 yr−1–200.00 g C m−2 yr−1 at a yearly scale; (2) the DL-LUE model mitigated the systematic underestimation of the in situ GPP by both the TL-LUE and BL-LUE models when the clearness index (CI) was below 0.5, as indicated by the Bias reductions of 0.25 g C m−2 d−1 and 0.46 g C m−2 d−1, respectively; and (3) the contributions of the shaded GPP to the total GPP from the DL-LUE model were higher by 0.07–0.16 than those from the TL-LUE model across the eight ChinaFLUX sites. The proposed parsimonious and effective DL-LUE model not only has great potential for improving global GPP estimations but also provides a more mechanism-based approach for partitioning the total GPP into its shaded and sunlit components.

A new global time-series GPP production: DFRF-GPP

Understanding the global ecosystem carbon cycle requires a quantitative estimation of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP). Although most existing GPP estimates can accurately reflect the spatial distribution, interannual trends and even seasonal cycles of GPP under average conditions to some extent, the GPP estimates of different models under extreme climate conditions are still unsatisfactory. In this study, based on the random forest algorithm, we integrated the multimodel GPP simulation results published by the Multiscale Synthesis and Terrestrial Model Intercomparison Project, the FLUXNET flux-site-observed GPP, the standardized precipitation index (SPI) and the standardized temperature index (STI) to generate a set of global GPP time-series data products from 2001 to 2010. The new GPP product was named DFRF-GPP, referring to the GPP generated by data fusion based on random forest. The quality of DFRF-GPP was evaluated by comparison with current commonly used GPP datasets and GPP observations at FLUXNET flux sites. The results showed that DFRF-GPP is in great agreement with other GPP products and can reproduce the spatial and temporal patterns and interannual trends of global GPP, with optimal performance in regions such as those north of 30° in the Northern Hemisphere where there are more FLUXNET flux sites. DFRF-GPP has higher accuracy and excellent performance on drought and high-temperature samples, with higher sensitivity to drought and high temperature. This study not only provides a set of time-series products of global gross primary production but also provides a convenient and practical solution for enhancing the applicability of GPP estimation products in large-scale extreme climate studies.

Fluorescence-based primary productivity estimates are influenced by non-photochemical quenching dynamics in Arctic phytoplankton.

Chlorophyll fluorescence-based estimates of primary productivity typically include dark or low-light pre-treatments to relax non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), a process that influences the relationship between PSII photochemistry and fluorescence yields. The time-scales of NPQ relaxation vary significantly between phytoplankton taxa and across environmental conditions, creating uncertainty in field-based productivity measurements derived from fluorescence. To address this practical challenge, we used fast repetition rate fluorometry to characterize NPQ relaxation kinetics in Arctic Ocean phytoplankton assemblages across a range of hydrographic regimes. Applying numerical fits to our data, we derived NPQ relaxation life times, and determined the relative contributions of various quenching components to the total NPQ signature across the different assemblages. Relaxation kinetics were best described as a combination of fast-, intermediate- and slow-relaxing processes, operating on time-scales of seconds, minutes, and hours, respectively. Across sampling locations and depths, total fluorescence quenching was dominated by the intermediate quenching component. Our results demonstrated an average NPQ relaxation life time of 20 ± 1.9 min, with faster relaxation among high light acclimated surface samples relative to lowlight acclimated sub-surface samples. We also used our results to examine the influence of NPQ relaxation on estimates of photosynthetic electron transport rates (ETR), testing the commonly held assumption that NPQ exerts proportional effects on light absorption (PSII functional absorption cross section, σPSII) and photochemical quantum efficiency (FV/FM). This assumption was violated in a number of phytoplankton assemblages that showed a significant decoupling of σPSII and FV/FM during NPQ relaxation, and an associated variability in ETR estimates. Decoupling of σPSII and FV/FM was most prevalent in samples displaying symptoms photoinhibition. Our results provide insights into the mechanisms and kinetics of NPQ in Arctic phytoplankton assemblages, with important implications for the use of FRRF to derive non-invasive, high-resolution estimates of photosynthetic activity in polar marine waters.
